Herbal Pre-Poo Oil

You’ll need to get these herbs for my pre-poo: amla powder, brahmi powder, red jaswand powder, sage leaf, & nettle leaf. Check out Butters-N-Bars online, your local herb shop, Indian Grocery, or health food store.

Quick background on Pre-Pooing… or check out your favorite natural hair bloggers sites for more info on pre-pooing.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil (click here for info about EVOO and your hair)

2 cups Coconut Oil (click for one site’s info about the benefits of coconut oil on hair)

2 TBSP Amla Powder (click to read about Amla’s affect on hair color, strength, and growth)

2 TBSP Brahmi Powder (click to read about Brahmi’s affect on hair)

1 TBSP Nettle Leaf Powder (click to read about how Nettle stimulates the scalp)

1 TBSP Red Jaswand Powder (click here for info about Jaswand AKA Hibiscus)

1 TBSP Sage Leaf Powder (click for info about Sage and dandruff)

15 drops Tea Tree Oil (click for info on the uses of Tea Tree)

15-25 drops of any other fragrant essential oil… be careful, this will have a STRONG herbal smell. I don’t add any additional EOs for smell.

Equipment:

1 jar with lid or air tight storage container (3-4 Cup capacity)

Measuring Spoons

Bowl (safe to hold HOT water)

Mix:

Add olive and coconut oils to jar. Place the jar with the oils into a bowl that allows  the jar to rest in the bottom of the bowl. Fill the BOWL half way with HOT water (water from the faucet should be hot enough) to create a water bath for the jar. The oil in the jar should be liquid (remember coconut oil solidifies at room temperature, adding it to the hot water bath should make it liquid). Add all herbs to the jar. Remove the jar from the water bath and secure the lid on the jar. Shake well. After removing the first water, place the sealed jar into the bowl and create a new water bath with hot water. Leave to steep for at least 2 hours before using.

When you are ready to use your oil, SHAKE WELL… the herbs will settle!! Transfer a small amount into an applicator bottle with a LARGE opening.

Hot Application: Warm the oil with a water bath before applying to damp hair.

OR

Apply directly to hair following your favorite pre-poo method.

Check out this highly recommended butter to seal your hair! It is on the pricey end for Jane Carter ($22.00 for 4 oz), but it lasts a long time as you only need to apply a little at a time.

Seal in your Moisture

You ever notice your hair is dry the next day after applying a “moisturizer”? Check your products and your regime and see if this helps:

1. Are you using WATER first? Water applied to your hair will be absorped into the shaft. Do this by washing weekly/biweekly or by dampening the hair using a spray bottle with water every few days. (Do what’s best for your hair and what works for you).

2. Be sure to stay away from ingredients that are heavy in mineral oils, lanolin, or petrolatum that claim to “moisturize” your hair. You can use products with these ingredients at your pleasure. They coat the hair adding “luster”, but that’s just the “look” of moisturized hair. Your goal is hair that feels moisturized and behaves moisturized.

3. Try natural sealants based on your hair texture. For finer, thinner hair you may want to try grape seed oil or cocunt oil; these are lighter and less likely to weigh your hair down. For thicker, courser hair you may want to try butters like shea and mango butters. You can even try layering oils & butters.

Try it out… maybe this will help!
